Literacy
In nursery, the children are introduced to systematic, synthetic phonics through sound discrimination, music, alliteration, rhyme and oral blending. Children listen, to join in and act out stories every day. In the summer term, the children learn the picture cards from RWI in readiness for daily RWI in reception. In reception children continue to develop the skills taught in nursery, alongside daily RWI lessons.
Words we love
Practitioner’s model finding and hearing new words and finding out what they mean. Eventually the children will start to do this, and share words they love with the class. These words are collected onto a display with a picture and action to help the children remember them. We share words that we love with our parent/carers in our home learning books. We practise these words every day in context.
Planned reading time
Teachers select books that interest the children (mixture of fiction and non-fiction). On the first day, they listen to the story from the beginning to the end, so that they hear the story structure and make their own decisions about the plot/dilemma. On the second day, they join in with the story, so that they can remember some of the repeated refrains/rhyming words/alliteration, and start to remember the story structure. On the third day, the children help the practitioners to act out the story using adults/children/or objects. The story plan enables children to develop their vocabulary, understanding of rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration, remember stories off by heart, and give them lots of ideas for independent play.
